The world’s first drivable 3D printed car has been unveiled, with Local Motors’ Strati being driven off the showroom floor at the International Manufacturing Technology Show in Chicago on Saturday (September 13th).
The car’s body, seats and major components were 3D printed, though it still features an electric motor from a Renault Twizy (yes, it’s an electric car, too) and several of its mechanical parts were taken from other vehicles, too.
However, the chassis and interior of the car was all subject of 3D printing, with Local Motors creating the vehicle in order to show off how the technology can be implemented in the industry’s future. Astonishingly, it took just 44 hours to build.
While it’s not exactly the most handsome looking thing (it kind of resembles the Batmobile I made out of cardboard as a kid, if the cardboard I used cost thousands of dollars) it’s certainly a bold step forward in terms of eco-friendly automobiles.
