Australia Cracks TripAdvisor’s Top 10 Beaches List

A lone Australian beach has managed to crack TripAdvisor’s list of top international beaches, mixing it up with some of the world’s best summer tourist destinations.

Whitehaven Beach’s 7km stretch along Queensland’s Whitsunday Islands has polled as the ninth best beach according to the popular travel website’s 2015 Travellers’ Choice Awards, losing out to Brazil’s Baia do Sancho.

Based on TripAdvisor reviews, Whitehaven’s silky sand (which doesn’t retain heat!) is so fine that it is known to damage cameras while attracting over 1500 marriages at the location each year. The dog and cigarette-free beach was also named CNN’s top Eco Friendly Beach in 2010.

A pair of Western Australian beaches, Turquoise Bay and Cable Beach, battled it out at the top of the order for Australia’s best ocean side spots behind Whitehaven (full list below).

Other top 10 voted international beaches include Italy’s Rabbit Beach in Lampedusa, the Caribbean’s Playa Paraiso Beach, Playa de Ses Illetes in Spain, Anse Lazio in the Seychelles and Greek beach Elafonissi Beach. New Zealand’s Maunganui Beach slipped in at No.25.
