It looks like the OS X El Capitan beta has revealed a new addition to the Apple iMac line-up, with references to a 4K model of the desktop hidden in the operating system’s source code.
The discovery was made by 9to5Mac, who found references to future Apple products hidden under El Capitan’s hood. One such discovery was a 21.5-inch iMac with a 4096 x 2304 resolution and a Retina display, a feature which is absent from the current version of the desktop.
The current, super expensive 27-inch iMac boasts a 5K Retina display, though thus far the 21.5-inch model has featured a still impressive 2560 x 1440 resolution. This bump up to 4K will allow for ultra-HD images to be viewed on the lower-spec version of the computer.

The source code also references a brand new chip set, Intel’s Iris Pro 6200, that could be set to be included in the 4K iMac of the near future, along with AMD Radeon R9 M380, M390, M395 and M395X processors.
With 4K looking set to become the default HD resolution in the not-so-distant future thanks to a myriad of television manufacturers jumping onto the ultra HD bandwagon, it would certainly be wise of Apple to equip the iMac with this unique selling point before it reaches a mainstream audience.
