Handheld cameras are convenient, though there are a number of obvious flaws that prevent them from being considered a serious tool for filmmakers, with image stabilization being chief among them. While steadicams serve to eradicate this problem, they typically don’t allow for the recording of high-quality footage, though the DJI Osmo provides an accomplished solution.
The Osmo is a handheld camera that houses a Zenmuse 3, stabilized by a 3-axis gimbal. Unlike many steadicams, the Osmo is capable of recording 4K, ultra high-definition footage at 30 frames per second, and a bump down to a full HD resolution makes it capable of recording in an even smoother 60fps, or 120fps for slow-motion footage.

Though no display is attached to the Osmo, there is a dock to attach your smartphone and an app that allows for integration with your mobile device. Buttons along the camera’s handle also allow its position to be adjusted via motor, with an automatic mode that allows for 360-degree panning, too. A trigger also allows users to choose between multiple modes of operation, including an upright, selfie, flashlight, locked and underslung mode.
The Osmo will retail for $649. It will also feature a variety of accessories upon release, including a bike & car mount, tripod, extension stick and phone mount.
