Is… is it over yet? It is? Oh, thank God. See, I like Back To The Future as much as the next guy, but wow, it really was inescapable yesterday, huh? Sure, being alive on the same day referenced in Back To The Future Part II was a once-in-a-lifetime thing, but October 21st basically saw the Internet slapping itself in the face with memes, jokes, tweets, Facebook posts and videos celebrating “Back To The Future day.” Even the President was getting in on the act:

But towards the tail-end of yesterday’s celebrations, an announcement was made that Back To The Future fans have been for since the film was released back in 1989: Nike will finally be releasing a pair of self-lacing sneakers.

Confirmed by Tinker Hatfield, Nike’s VP of creative concepts, the self-lacing Nike Mag is scheduled to launch in Spring 2016 and is the company’s first use of the self-lacing technology, though they’ve stated that they will be bringing it to more footwear in the future. Nike is planning to sell them in an auction with proceeds going to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s research, with there being no word yet on whether or not they’ll see a commercial release. Nike has also yet to release any pricing information.
Michael J. Fox, who portrayed Marty McFly in the Back To The Future trilogy, can be seen trying on the first pair of the sneakers here. Needless to say they aren’t the most visually appealing of footwear, but that was pretty much the case when they made their appearance in the movie. They’ve been fitted with flashing lights this time around, too, just in case you wanted your feet to stand out even more whilst wearing them.
