If you were watching last night’s episode of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, chances are that you’ll have spotted Mac wearing an alarmingly ugly sleeveless shirt, even by his own standards. It turns out that the shirt was actually a subtle piece of product placement advertising stock-trading app Robinhood, a company which Mac’s actor and It’s Always Sunny‘s creator Rob McElhenney has invested in.
Robinhood’s feather lego was apparent on the bright turquoise shirt, and featured in a couple of scenes in the episode. The company have now announced that the stunt was pulled as a result of McElhenney being their latest investor, with him joining the a number of famous faces in support of the startup.
According to Robinhood’s official site, the app “is a stock brokerage that allows customers to buy and sell U.S. listed stocks and ETFs with zero commission.” They add: “We believe that everyone should have access to the financial markets and are on a mission to inspire a new generation of investors.” Robinhood has raised $66 million from the likes of celebrities Jared Leto, Snoop Dogg, Linkin Park, and Nas, along with companies such as NEA, Index Ventures, Ribbit Capital, Vaizra Investments, Google Ventures, Andreessen Horowitz and Social Leverage.
The product placements seem to have worked out well, with various Twitter users taking to the site to question just what on Earth Mac was wearing.
While we’re not entirely sure of the amount of crossover between It’s Always Sunny viewers and aspiring stock brokers, Robinhood will be thankful for the extra bit of promotion from their latest investor.
