Well, some of them may have been from Steve’s 21st birthday party last week, but still, that’s a shit ton of beads.
According to The New Orleans Times-Picayune, there are several things such as leaves and mud that are clogging up the catch basins in New Orleans, but let’s be honest. That’s pretty much the story in the majority of the sewer systems across the country.
What makes this story unique is that there is another item that is clogging the shit out of the sewers in a “five-block stretch of St. Charles Avenue” in Downtown New Orleans. And yes, given what New Orleans is predominantly known for, and based on the fact that it’s in the title, you have probably already guessed that it’s 93,000 pounds worth of Mardi Gras beads.
Crews working for Compliance EnviroSystems managed to pull out nearly 7.2 million pounds of trash and other debris from the catch basins between September 26 to January 23, and roughly 93,000 of those pounds came in the form of beads. The city’s solution to make sure it doesn’t happen again this year? You guessed it – temporarily stuffing the sewers at the surface with “gutter buddies.”
And that’s great because asking people not to exchange beads for boobs would be, well, just terrible.
