Rod Stewart To Sing Canadian-Written Song At Commonwealth Games

Canada will be represented in Glasgow tonight for the opening ceremonies of the Commonweath Games when musician Rod Stewart sings “Rhythm of my Heart” there, a tune that was written almost 25 years ago by Canadian songwriter Marc Jordan.

Stewart will be performing along with Susan Boyle of “Britain’s Got Talent” fame, violinist Nicola Benedetti, musician Julie Fowlis, and singer Amy Macdonald. It’s the 25th anniversary of the Commonwealth Games where 4500 athletes will compete.

“It’s an amazing feeling when one of your songs has a life beyond,” Jordan told CBC News. He’s in Glasgow for the Commonwealth Games. “It’s like a child going out into the world. They say a billion and a half people are going to be watching. That’s a lot of people!” Jordan, who is a multiple Juno and Socan Award winner, has written songs for Diana Ross, Manhattan Transfer, Bette Midler, Chicago, Kenny Loggins, Joe Cocker, Amanda Marshall, Cher, Bonnie Raitt, Josh Groban, and three other songs for Rod Stewart.

“Songwriters are in the background for sure,” he said in the same interview. “I’m totally fine with that. It’s not about me. Songwriting is something between the listener and the song so I’m happy to be in the background.”

The Commonwealth Games will be broadcast by the CBC and streamed live on CBCSports.ca at 3:30pm eastern.
