World No. 1 Novak Djokovic has won his 5th Australian Open title, defeating Andy Murray in 4 sets at Rod Laver Arena on Sunday night.
In a typically fantastic Men’s Singles Australian Open Final, both players gave every ounce of energy in an epic battle of strength and wits before another vocally interactive crowd at Melbourne Park.
Both players broke service twice in the opening set. After 72 minutes, Djokovic prevailed 7-5 in the tie-breaker using his dominant first serve (65% accuracy) to oppress his opponent, winning 78% of his points via first service rallies.
Murray struck back in the second firing up his forehand to break twice again and take the tie-breaker convincingly 7-4. Djokovic looked to lose power in his legs momentarily and Murray seemed ready to pounce.
But it was not to be for Murray, who lost his composure midway through the 3rd set after missing a number of opportunities to close-out points.
“The support I have had here (in Australia) is amazing,” Murray commented after the match. The Scot has never won in Australia, but has consistently reached the final stages of the tournament.
Djokovic was humble, praising his tough opponent and warm in referring to the upcoming wedding for Murray with his fiancée Kim Sears.
“You are a great competitor and you fight a lot. I wish you a wonderful wedding and many kids!”
“It is truly one of the greatest sporting competitions around the world and I am so privileged to play here,” Djokovic remarked after being handed the winners cup with many past greats watching on in the crowd.
Djokovic won the Australian Open for the first time in 2008. He completed a hattrick in 2011, 2012 and 2013. This trophy is his 8th Grand Slam and 49th career singles title.
