Last year, Marvel’s Jessica Jones series finally dropped on Netflix. But it may be up to three years between the first and second season of the series! Netflix took its time renewing Jessica Jones, which means that the second season won’t start shooting until after The Defenders. And with Iron Fist, The Defenders, and The Punisher likely to be released in 2017,2018 seems to be the most likely time for Jessica to return.
In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Jessica Jones showrunner Melissa Rosenberg didn’t offer much in the way of season 2 spoilers. However, she did tease that the new villain has already been picked and answered the question of how the series could possibly top David Tennant’s Kilgrave. “No one is ever going to beat David Tennant as Kilgrave, so you don’t do that,” said Rosenberg. “The biggest mistake would be to try to repeat that. You just go, ‘OK, we’re not doing that, so we have this open to us.’” Rosenberg noted that there may “antagonists, plural” this season, but she declined to give away who they may be.

Rosenberg also told EW that she’s been collaborating with The Defenders showrunners Marco Ramirez and Doug Petrie about building on Jessica’s experiences in that show when she returns to her own series. Rosenberg also related that the relationship that she intends to keep exploring is the one between Jessica and adoptive sister, Trish.
“I’m interested in continuing to explore the relationship between Trish and Jessica,” said Rosenberg. “That is the core relationship in the piece. It is about female friendship, it is about how friends evolve — they’re sisters, really — and it’s about how they evolve and ping off each other. I’m interested in relationships, whether they be romantic, or family, or friends, or professional — that’s what’s interesting to me, is Jessica in relationship to people.”
