Wayne Rooney would reportedly consider an offer to play in the MLS, according to Portland Timbers‘ owner Merritt Paulson.
Manchester United veteran Rooney has been linked to a number of clubs in this latter stage of his career, though has remained dedicated to Old Trafford despite his declining form. However, with the recent acquisition of Zlatan Ibrahimovic shaping up nicely for United, it could be the time for new manager Jose Mourinho to pull the trigger on any transfer offers he receives for the club’s talisman, as they may begin to reduce due to Rooney’s continued struggles with his current attacking midfielder role.
Speaking about the likelihood of Rooney making the move to the MLS, Paulson told the Daily Star: “I would argue he still has some good soccer ahead of him. People assume he is older than he is.
“I think he would be a great signing for the MLS I really would. 100 per cent the MLS would be attractive for him. Keeping in mind that is a very talented footballer who has quality soccer ahead of him you are not talking about a 34 or 35-year-old.”
Paulson concluded: “I get excited about the impact he would have in MLS more than a guy who is coming in later in his career.”
The MLS has acquired many previous top-flight Premier League talents in the past, including Rooney’s former England teammates Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard. With Mourinho having raided United’s bank during the transfer window, signing Ibrahimovic alongside his record-breaking deal for midfielder Paul Pogba, the manager could be looking to regain some of that cash by selling Rooney to the US league.
