Emmy voters have constantly demonstrated their fondness for giving previous Emmy winners repeat wins…sometimes for several years in a row. HBO was once again a beneficiary of that trend this year, as its flagship series, Game of Thrones and Veep once again took home the top honors as TV’s best drama and comedy, respectively. Game of Thrones was shut out of the acting categories, but Miguel Sapochnik won best drama director, and showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss won in the drama writers category for the penultimate episode of Game of Thrones‘ sixth season: “Battle of the Bastards.” Veep‘s Julia Louis-Dreyfus won her fifth consecutive lead actress in a comedy award. Other repeat winners included Transparent‘s Jeffrey Tambor as best lead actor in a comedy, and American Crime‘s Regina King as supporting lead actress in a limited series.
The rest of the acting awards were far from predictable. Mr. Robot‘s Rami Malek and Orphan Black‘s Tatiana Maslany were the surprise winners of this year’s leading actor and actress in a drama, respectively. Ben Mendelsohn won outstanding supporting actor in a drama for his performance in Bloodline, which was the first time that a Netflix series had won in that category. Downton Abby‘s Maggie Smith won outstanding supporting actress award, but neither Smith nor Mendelsohn showed up to collect their awards in person.

One of the biggest winners of the night was FX’s American Crime Story: The People vs. O.J. Simpson, which won best miniseries and it also took home best actor and actress awards for its stars, Courtney B. Vance and Sarah Paulson. Sherlock: The Abominable Bride was named the best TV movie.
