‘The Simpsons’ Go Full ‘Adventure Time’ In New Couch Gag

This Sunday, The Simpsons is returning to Fox for its 28th season…and that’s a pretty insane length for any show to reach! To mark the occasion, this Sunday’s couch gag will reinvent Springfield’s most famous residents as characters from the Land of Ooo. That’s right, it’s Adventure Time

Although a few of the Simpsons family appear as themselves, Bart gets mashed up with Finn the human and Homer is crossed with Jake the Dog. Oh…and of course Mr. Burns is the Ice King. Who else could he be? The short also features the return of a long requested guest star, the inanimate carbon rod!

It’s not quite as crazy as the time Rick and Morty accidentally killed the Simpsons during the opening sequence, but it’s enjoyable enough. Naturally, this opening has nothing to do with the rest of the episode, which finds comedian Amy Schumer taking over the role of Mr. Burns’ mom as his backstory is expanded (or alternately, completely ignored for the sake of this episode) to explain what turned him into such a bitter and horrible man.

“We said a good character for our plot would be that she’s Burns’ mother in the past and kind of the source of this unhappiness that he has that’s haunted him to the present,” said executive producer Al Jean via The Huffington Post. Strangely enough, Schumer is also guest starring on the season premieres of Bob’s Burgers and Family Guy, both of which will air after The Simpsons’ season premiere this Sunday, September 25.
