Lily Allen and Mark Ronson Team for Anti-Trump Protest Song

There’s already been a steady stream of protest songs in the wake of Donald Trump being selected president of the U.S., and they’ve likely only just started. And they will come from around the world, as the policies enacted or rolled back by Trump & Co. will have potentially catastrophic impact on the entire planet. Brits Lily Allen and Mark Ronson have collaborated on an exemplary cover of Rufus Wainwright’s 2007 track “Going to a Town” that underscores the mourning and time-release shock that is embedded in the lyrics. Perhaps most striking, though, is the video for the track. Footage of British protests from the recent global Women’s March is used in the video, and it’s a powerful complement to the lyrics.

Lyrics:

I’m going to a town that has already been burnt down

I’m going to a place that has already been disgraced

I’m gonna see some folks who have already been let down

I’m so tired of America

I’m gonna make it up for all of The Sunday Times

I’m gonna make it up for all of the nursery rhymes

They never really seem to want to tell the truth

I’m so tired of you, America

Making my own way home

Ain’t gonna be alone

I’ve got a life to lead, America

I’ve got a life to lead

Tell me, do you really think you go to hell for having loved?

Tell me, enough of thinking everything that you’ve done is good

I really need to know, after soaking the body of Jesus Christ in blood

I’m so tired of America
