Ten years ago, DC Entertainment kicked off its line of animated films with a very loose adaptation of the Death of Superman storyline that cut out many of the most popular aspects from the classic storyline. At Comic-Con International, DC revealed that it is going to try again with a two-movie adaptation.
Last night, at the Batman and Harley Quinn World Premiere panel at Comic-Con, DC and Warner Bros. Animation announced Death of Superman, which will be released in late 2018. It’s sequel, Reign of the Supermen, will arrive in 2019. The voice cast has not yet been revealed.
In the ’90s, the original Death of Superman storyline saw the Man of Steel faced with the task of stopping Doomsday, a mysterious and unstoppable brute who was on the verge of annihilating Metropolis. Superman defeated the monster at the cost of his own life, which became one of the biggest comics events of the decade.

Once DC realized that the story was a massive hit, the tale was expanded in The Reign of the Supermen; which introduced four new heroes who claimed the mantle of Superman for themselves. They were Steel, Superboy, the Eradicator, and the Cyborg Superman. All four characters proved to be extremely popular with fans, and they have remained a part of Superman’s mythos ever since.
Additionally, DC revealed that its next film will be an adaptation of the Elseworlds classic, Batman: Gotham by Gaslight; which will be followed by Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay. Gotham by Gaslight is expected to premiere this year, while Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay seems likely for early 2018.
