Dr. Evil is back, baby! Not only is he back, but he’s ready to solve climate change. In one of the more memorable Super Bowl 56 commercials, General Motors recruited members of the Austin Powers franchise to reprise their iconic roles. The spot, which is titled Dr. EV-il (an acronym for Electric Vehicles) sees Virtucon taking over the General Motors headquarters as the hub of their operation.
Although Austin himself is nowhere to be found, Mike Meyers, Seth Green, Mindy Sterling, and Rob Lowe all reprise their roles in an attempt to save the world so that they can take it back over. If anything this commercial proves that even someone as villainous as Dr. Evil isn’t as dastardly as Jeff Bezos or Elon Musk.
As you can see, this bug game spot is basically a greatest hits compilation between Dr. Evil and his cronies. Although it does feel a bit derivative, it’s also short enough that it doesn’t overstay its welcome. While the whole “reducing our carbon footprint” message is an admirable one, GM also has a history of making false promises.
Other than hiring Dr. Evil as the company’s spokesperson, that is. Apparently, Meyers recently signed with General Motors to advertise their new fleet of electric vehicles. So you know that we can probably expect more where this came from in the future.
