Mandatory Trailers: Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers Movie Reboot Reminds Us Of ‘Space Jam 2’ But Much Less Shitty

For anyone who grew up in the late 80s or early 90s, Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers was undoubtedly an afternoon children’s television mainstay. Despite barely lasting 3 seasons, the show has since become beloved. After all, who doesn’t love two chipmunks who solve crimes and save the day? But when Disney announced that they would be giving the obligatory live-action reboot treatment to the series, the future looked bleak. After all, some properties remain time capsules of their era and are better left untouched.

However, that all changed when The Lonely Island got involved. For those who are unaware, The Lonely Island are the geniuses behind modern comedy classics like Hot Rod and Pop Star: Never Stop Never Stopping. Akiva Schaffer returns to his role of director, while Andy Samberg voices Dale. John Mulaney voices Chip, officially making this the SNL crossover that we never thought we needed.

As you can see, Chip ’n Dale: Rescue Rangers seems reminiscent of Space Jam 2, just much less shitty. They both revive decades-old franchises, they both feature 2D animated characters making the jump to 3D, and most importantly they’re both crossovers with other studio-owned-IP. And yet, this teaser trailer for Chip ’n Dale: Rescue Rangers is everything that Space Jam 2 wanted to be, but isn’t.

And while this reboot had the ability to be Tom and Jerry level-bad, The Lonely Island have managed to somehow make this dormant property feel relevant again. At the same time, the movie looks to be comically self-aware in the best way possible. What’s so interesting about the premise of this trailer is that it is not an adaptation of the show, but rather a “real-life” movie following up the characters who starred in the show. 

It’s something similar to what another Disney animated movie is doing with Pixar’s Lightyear, but rather as a live-action hybrid. Luckily for us, there isn’t much time to wait for the film, which streams May 20, 2022, on Disney+. Let’s just hope the movie lives up to the promise of this trailer.
