Duffer Brothers Tease Potential ‘Stranger Things’ Spinoff (If They Don’t Kill Off Your Favorite Character First)

The second part of Stranger Things hasn’t even dropped yet but the Duffer brothers are already generating buzz about a possible spinoff of the hit sci-fi Netflix show.

Series creators Matt and Ross Duffer recently did an interview with Variety, and while the dynamic duo didn’t divulge any details on the possible spinoff, they did hint that it will be “different than what anyone is expecting.”

One could spend all day hypothesizing about what the focus of a spinoff would be: a character, a time period, a place? The increasingly convoluted web around the events in Hawkins provides myriad opportunities for expansion…and endless options for otherworldly antagonists.

“The reason we haven’t done anything is just because you don’t want to be doing it for the wrong reasons, and it was just like, ‘Is this something I would want to make regardless of it being related to ‘Stranger Things’ or not?’ And definitely,” Matt said. “Even if we took the ‘Stranger Things’ title off of it, I’m so, so excited about it. But it is not… It’s going to be different than what anyone is expecting, including Netflix.”

In addition to the Duffer brothers, at least one other person knows what the spinoff idea is. Finn Wolfhard, who plays Mike, guessed what the spinoff subject was.

“Finn Wolfhard, he wasn’t spitballing, he just went, ‘I think this would be a cool spin-off,'” Ross said. “And we were like, ‘How in the world…'”

But hold your horses, Stranger Things fans. We still have Season 4, Part 2 to get through, followed by Season 5, which will be the last season of the show. Given how long it takes to get new installments of Stranger Things on the air, a spinoff wouldn’t premiere until 2024 or 2025.

That said, there’s no doubt that there’s plenty of material for a spinoff. It’s really more of a question of when rather than if. As the Duffer brothers said, “There are still many more exciting stories to tell within the world of Stranger Things; new mysteries, new adventures, new unexpected heroes.”

We can’t wait to see what they come up with.
