As you now know, Will Smith has finally broken his silence about the infamous Oscars slap with Chris Rock that dominated headlines and fascinated pop culture fanatics for weeks following the shocking incident at the 94th Academy Awards in March.
In case you’ve been living under an actual rock, comedian and host Rock made a G.I. Jane joke, which was a reference to Jada Pinkett Smith’s bald head. Jada suffers from alopecia, and the barb pissed off her husband, Will. Will Smith sauntered up to the stage and smacked Rock across the face.
It took four months for Smith to say anything meaningful about the ordeal or to even attempt to apologize to Rock. He did so in a YouTube video that has obviously gone viral (because apparently we just can’t get enough of this real-life drama).
While Chris Rock hasn’t directly addressed the incident in a YouTube video of his own (because who uses YouTube anymore?), the comic did perform onstage in Atlanta at the Fox Theatre while on his Ego Death world tour following the release of the aforementioned video and got in a few jabs of his own about it.
“If everybody claims to be a victim, then nobody will hear the real victims,” he said. “Even me getting smacked by Suge Smith.” (And, no, he didn’t really mean Marion “Suge” Knight, the Death Row Records co-founder who is in prison for murder). “I went to work the next day, I got kids.”
Rock later added, “Anyone who says words hurt has never been punched in the face.”
We don’t know if this qualifies as Rock getting the last laugh. All we know is we sure are sick of hearing about the infamous slap. Can we move on now, gentlemen?
