Wolfmother are back in unexpected fashion, dropping a surprise new album over the weekend.
New Crown is the name new of the new record- featured on bandcamp as a free stream and can be purchased whole for a cheeky $7- and is the Australian band’s first release 2009’s Cosmic Egg and follows on from frontman Andrew Stockdale’s 2013 solo album Keep Moving.
The 10-track album is more in the blues rock style of the debut Wolfmother offering, 2005’s self-titled album, and comes after Stockdale declared last year that the band was done.
Stockdale announced in March last year that he was pursuing a solo career at roughly the same time as Keep Moving was released, later cancelling his 14-stop Aussie tour a day out from its launch.
The Wolfmother trio of Stockdale, bassist Ian Peres and drummer Vin Steele re-emerged in the US mid-year just months after declaring their supporting of Aerosmith’s Australian tour as the band’s last shows as a collective.
“It might not be the smartest choice but all I wanted to do was put out a record under my own name and self-produce it,” Stockdale told FasterLouder last year of his decision to briefly fly solo.
“I might lose fans or might gain fans, but you’ve got to have a go at doing what you want to do at some point in your life.”
The boys have also announced a couple of upcoming shows to support the release of New Crown– you can catch Wolfmother at The Corner Hotel in Melbourne on Monday, March 31 and The Oxford Art Factory in Sydney on Wednesday, April 2.
