IGN published an article just an hour ago with information that no gamer wanted to hear: The Last Guardian has been “canceled”. Given the outlet’s prominence, the announcement was taken very seriously despite being based on an unnamed source. However, gamers might be in luck.
PlayStation’s Scott Rohde was quick to refute the claims of The Last Guardian‘s development coming to an end with the following Tweet:
@notaxation @Yosp and I laughed at this rumor over dinner. The Last Guardian has NOT been cancelled.
It seems that there is a huge misunderstanding, or that IGN’s source wasn’t as credible as they hoped it would be. Will we see the game at E3 next week? Or will it continue its vaporware-esque story?
The Last Guardian was leaked on PlayStation LifeStyle back in 2009 under the name Project Trico, and apparently already had more than two years in development at that point. The game has remained in limbo since then as Sony has continued to spur on hope while the game shows no sign of existence otherwise.
Team ICO is one of Sony’s most successful first-party studios, with the legendary ICO and Shadow of the Colossus under its belt. Some gamers are already suggesting that the game has been moved to PS4 in order to realize its vision. If so, it might take a while longer before it’s ready to hit the market.
