The Winnipeg Folk Festival gets started today and more than 80,000 music fans are expected to pour into Birds Hill Provincial Park as the event runs from today till through the weekend.
Performers at the Winnipeg Folk Festival include country songstress Bonnie Raitt, The Sheepdogs, and a bevy of homegrown and local talent who will all play on one of ten stages. There is a Hand-Made Village to shop in, a Prairie Outdoor Exhibition to explore, as well as delicious, sustainably-sourced food to eat from the various vendors who will be situated throughout the site. Given the family-friendly nature of the Winnipeg Folk Festival, many attendees are camping on-site, and kids get into the fest for free (they must be 12 or under).
Raitt, who is now 64 and released her first self-titled album back in 1971, has become an icon in music. She has won 10 Grammy Awards, and she is number 50 in “Rolling Stone” magazine’s list of the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time. Her most recent album, “Now & Then,” came out last year.
Meanwhile, The Sheepdogs out of Saskatoon, who became a household name after winning a cover contest for “Rolling Stone” magazine, recently announced their splitting of ways with bandmate Leot Hanson. They are currently on tour across Canada.
