Paul McCartney has revealed a previously unseen photograph of The Beatles’ final live concert in Candlestick Park, San Francisco.
The Beatles’ final performance took place in the venue on August 29th, 1966, playing to a crowd of 25,000 (though the venue held 42,500 – that’s right, The Beatles didn’t sell out on their last ever scheduled live show). The Beatles would reunite for an unannounced live appearance on the rooftop of the Apple building in 1969.
McCartney displayed the photograph, which can be seen below, on a big screen behind him as he performed in Candlestick Park last night (August 14th). The former Beatle named the gig “Farewell To Candlestick: The Final Concert” in reference to the band’s 1966 show, along with it being the last destination of his ‘Out There’ tour.
Speaking at the end of his two-and-a-half hour performance, McCartney said: “Thank you, San Francisco, for being cool now and for being cool back then.”
The legendary Candlestick Park is not to be shut down, with McCartney fittingly providing the stadium with its last ever live event. With 50,000 fans in attendance, the turn-out for the sold-out show was spectacular, as San Francisco waved goodbye to the venue after 54 years.
