A good taste in music is a quality that any gentlemen worth his weight should have. This weekend, visitors to The Gentlemen’s Expo were treated with a number of popular Canadian indie rock artists, giving some Gentlemen a chance to expand their musical pallets and others to cement what they already knew.
Friday night saw performances by the Luke Austin Band, The Darcys, and Hollerado. Closing of the night was Hollerado, who brought a well-needed surge of energy to the first night. Hollerado are the type of band that even if you don’t know them too well, their infectious energy and catchy pop-infused jams really bring you in. With the crowd reaching its largest levels of the night, Hollerado kicked off the weekend in a solid fashion.
Saturday saw the most performers, scattered throughout the day. The music began with the wonderful Basia Bulat, who kept a small crowd enraptured for her set with her haunting vocals and hypnotizing guitar skills. Basia Bulat has got to be one of Canada’s best guitar players at the moment, and it certainly helps that she has a killer Rickenbacker to play on. While Saturday’s sets featured mostly stripped down, pseudo-acoustic performances, it didn’t stop Zeus from bringing the groove to The Gentlemen’s Expo. Zeus are one of those bands that really brings a fun energy to their shows, something that can lacking in a lot of modern rock bands.
The night ended on a very mellow note with the stripped-down Born Ruffians. Even with less of their usual kinetic energy, the set was a nice cap to a long day with a very chill vibe infusing their sound. The Born Ruffians set also proved one of the great things about music, that if the song is good and catchy, it doesn’t really matter how it’s played.
