Fremantle tagger Ryan Crowley’s future is in doubt, with the Dockers star provisionally suspended after testing positive for a banned substance.
Crowley was issued with a ‘show cause’ notice from the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority after the positive test, which was taken after Fremantle’s July 13 win against Greater Western Sydney. He is waiting to front an AFL Anti-Doping Tribunal.
The samples were not tested until August and September, allowing Crowley to finish playing the 2014 season. He accepted the provisional suspension from the AFL, which began September 25 last year.
While the substance has not been named, it has been confirmed that it was contained within a painkiller that Crowley took, but which was not prescribed by the Dockers.
31-year-old Crowley was reported by Fairfax Media to have been considering his retirement after the suspension, however Dockers CEO Steve Rosich stood behind the veteran tagger.

“A player at his age probably tries to weigh up a number of things as they get older and maybe that played on his mind when he was considering it,” Mr Rosich said.
“But I can say it was a relatively short thought”
