Maynard of Tool, Puscifer Defends EDM: “It’s The Human Interaction Part That’s The Art”

EDM found an unlikely defender in Maynard James Keenan, the enigmatic and notoriously irascible frontman for Tool, Puscifer and A Perfect Circle. In a recent interview with the Phoenix New Times, the winemaking rocker compared contemporary opposition to the rise of electronic music to initial reactions among the art world to the invention of commercial photography.

“People would argue that photography is not an art form because the camera just does it for you. How could that be an art form? But there’s a human interaction to that,” Keenan says. “Well, it’s how the human is interacting with the inanimate object. It’s always been that way, you know? The chisel is the chisel . . . You’re using the chisel to move the rock around. But it’s the human interaction part that’s the art.”

Here’s to hoping he’s not talking about spacebar heroes like DJ Falcon and the like, who do little more than wave their arms and choose the next track on a playlist. Meanwhile, as the interview suggest, we shouldn’t hold our breath for a new Tool record anytime soon. However, Puscifer’s new album Money Shot is out the day before Halloween.
