Bad news, Uncharted fans: Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End‘s lead multiplayer designer Robert Cogburn has stated that the game will most likely be Naughty Dog’s last entry in the series, saying that the studio wants to “go out on top” following the release of the next entry in the franchise.
In an interview with GameSpot, Coburn said that the studio had internally discussed making Uncharted 4 the last Uncharted game they developer, telling the site: “We as a studio feel that this will probably be the last Uncharted game we do. Who knows?”
GameSpot stated that Coburn later claimed that this wasn’t confirmed, but it seems that Sony’s most valuable first-party studio is feeling a little burnt out with its flagship franchise. With rumors continuing to circulate that they are in the process of beginning development on a sequel to The Last of Us, it could be possible that Naughty Dog is looking to transform that game into a series that will replace Uncharted, or that they are focusing upon a brand new IP.
While Naughty Dog leaving the Uncharted series behind wouldn’t necessarily mean we wouldn’t see any more entries in the series, as Sony and Naughty Dog could hand the license over to another studio, many of its fans likely wouldn’t feel comfortable with it being placed in the hands of another other developer. It remains to be seen whether Colburn’s comments will lead to an official statement from Naughty Dog, but right now it looks like Uncharted 4 could well be the developer’s last entry in the series.
