Peter Jackson Will Direct a Doctor Who Episode Next Season

Director Peter Jackson is a longtime Doctor Who fan who has frequently voiced his desire to helm an episode of the current series on BBC. Jackson even jokingly said that he would do it if he got to keep one of the Daleks for himself!

Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat has also been trying to land Jackson on the series for the last few seasons. And while it took at least four years to happen, Jackson will finally get behind-the-camera for Doctor Who’s tenth season. Jackson posted a video to his Facebook page to make the announcement alongside his daughter, Katie. And who should show up to deliver the papers than the Doctor himself, Peter Capaldi!

Amusingly, Capaldi appears in character as the Doctor and he even runs afoul of a Dalek in Jackson’s personal collection.

Jackson is of course best known for directing The Lord of The Rings trilogy and The Hobbit trilogy, as well as the 2005 remake of King Kong, The Lovely Bones, and The Frighteners. Moffat co-wrote the animated film, The Adventures of Tintin which was produced by Jackson and directed by Steven Spielberg. Moffat would be the most likely writer to team up with Jackson on a Doctor Who episode. However, Jackson could also potentially write the episode himself, or with his wife and frequent screenwriting partner, Fran Walsh.

Presumably Doctor Who Season 10 will begin production next year. Capaldi is confirmed for at least one more season as the Doctor. Thus far, there has been no word on who will portray the new Doctor Who companion now that Jenna Coleman has left the show.
