And so it has come to this: every single year, for three years in a row (and if they keep making money, probably every single year after that), there will be a new Transformers movie in theaters.
It’s tempting to hyperbolize about this. “One day historians will look back and wonder why we said nothing to stop it,” etc. But the simple fact is that people like big dumb toy commercials and lately they’re paying billions of dollars to see them on the big screen, so of course we’re getting more of them. And with Disney doubling down both Marvel Studios superhero movies and Star Wars films, flooding the multiplexes with tried-and-true franchise content every year, during practically every season, it was only a matter of time before the other studios followed suit with their on popular series.
Paramount announced today that Transformers 5 will be released on June 23, 2017. That’s the same day as Wonder Woman is scheduled to come out, meaning that Warner Bros. is probably going to shift that release date a little. Wonder Woman, though highly anticipated and promising, is a more-or-less new franchise competing with a time-honored juggernaut.

Transformers 6 is coming on June 8, 2018 and Transformers 7 is coming on June 28, 2019. Michael Bay is currently directing Transformers 5, but unless he’s shooting multiple films at once it seems likely that Paramount will finally announce that a new director is taking over the franchise. No other filmmaker has directed a live-action Transformers movie, and the franchise has become intrinsically linked with Bay’s bombastic visual style. One wonders who Paramount thinks can fill his shoes, and whether or not they will be required to ape the existing Transformers visual dynamic or be allowed to put their own creative stamp on the franchise.
Paramount is also working on an animated prequel to the Transformers movies, but there’s no word yet on where that fits into the studio’s schedules.

Mad Max: Fury Road

It seems unlikely that George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road will win the Best Picture Oscar, but a few short months ago it seemed even more unlikely that it would be nominated. Fortunately, his high-octane post-apocalyptic thrill ride is so exceptionally crafted, and unexpectedly dense with feminist themes, that the Academy saw fit to nominate the film for its highest honor. What a lovely day indeed!
