James Cameron, the genius behind Pocahontas in Space Avatar has gone all Peter Jackson on us and has announced that Avatar will have four sequels – one more than previously planned.
Cameron made the announcement at CinemaCon, the news writer’s gift that just keeps giving. Earlier, news came from the same event that Deadpool 2 is pretty much a done deal.
The Oscar-winning director, who also helmed Titanic, The Terminator, Aliens 2, True Lies, and ahem, Piranha II: The Spawning, told the conference (according to The Hollywood Reporter) “We have decided to embark on a truly massive cinematic process.”
Explaining why he’s decided to make four out of three, Cameron explained: “We began to bump up against the limitations for our art form…so far, the art I’m seeing is, in pure imagination, really far beyond the first film. It’s going to be a true epic saga.”
Cameron originally planned to release the second Avatar film at the end of this year, but that date’s now been bumped back to 2018. Avatars 3, 4 and 5 will follow in 2020, 2022 and 2023, respectively.
Figures on Box Office Mojo show that Avatar holds the worldwide record for box-office takings, with about $US 2.787 billion. However. it has lost the record for domestic U.S take, which is now held by Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens.
