Syfy May Order a Pilot Episode For Superman Prequel ‘Krypton’

If you thought that it was impossible to out-prequel Smallville’s ten seasons to turn Clark Kent into Superman then you haven’t heard of Krypton, the David Goyer penned prequel series that is set to follow Superman’s grandfather two hundred years before the planet blew up! Syfy optioned Krypton as a series all the way back in December 2014, and it’s finally getting some momentum.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Syfy is close to ordering a pilot episode for Krypton, but that’s not set in stone yet. The pilot script for Krypton was written by Goyer and Ian Goldberg, a veteran of Once Upon a Time. Colm McCarthy is slated to direct the Krypton pilot, but casting won’t begin until Syfy commits to the pilot order.

In a way, Krypton is the equivalent of Superman’s Gotham. Which is to say that it’s an attempt to do a Superman show without Superman. That’s been one of the most frustrating things about Gotham, as almost all of the Dark Knight’s villains have shown up, but Bruce Wayne will probably never suit up as Batman before the end of that series. Krypton is especially problematic because it won’t be able to bring in many of the classic Superman characters because of the time period difference and the fact that Superman’s friends and enemies primarily live on Earth.

If anything, Krypton sounds like Caprica, Syfy’s failed attempt to extend the Battlestar Galactica reboot by creating a prequel series that didn’t have the elements that fans wanted to see from a BSG story. Fans can put up with a lot of changes, but they don’t have a lot of patience when they aren’t getting what they want out of a story.
