In Remembrance: Prince, Basketball Player

Prince, one of the most talented and beloved musicians of all time, passed away at the early age of 57 on Thursday.

The shocking loss has left countless people in mourning, including President Obama, who penned a heartfelt tribute to the icon. As fans and admirers remember the guitarist/singer/songwriter/performer, I was also remembering the basketball player.

Below is from an article I posted March of last year.

Before belting “Purple Rain,” Prince was most likely making it rain on the court. Thanks to these Twitter posts showing snippets from Minneapolis Star Tribune archives, we now know that Prince was quite the baller as a kid.

First, the picture from Bryant Jr. High, showing off the ‘fro.

Based on Prince’s age, the picture is most likely from around 1972.

His old basketball coach thought he could have started on one of the best teams he had ever seen.

Similar to Michael Jackson, Prince wasn’t just a once-in-a-generation talent, he was a once-in-a-humankind talent.

Lucky for us he was only 5-foot-2. If he were any taller, who knows, he may have been a pro basketball player.
