Xavier Dolan, one of Canada’s most celebrated film talents, has done it again – his latest project, Juste la fin du monde (It’s Only the End of the World), won the Grand Prix, the second most prestigious awards at the 69th annual Cannes Film Festival after the Palme d’Or (which has never been given to a Canadian). The film, which was well-received by some reviewers and not so much by others, will hit theatres across the country this September.
In his acceptance speech, Dolan said (as reported by Global News), “Thank you for feeling the emotion of the film… I did my best to make a film, and to tell the story and emotions of characters that were sometimes mean, sometimes garish but especially wounded and who live like so many of us.”
Dolan’s film Mommy won the Jury Prize back in 2014, which he shared with Jean-Luc Godard. Dolan, who is 27 and a native of Montreal, told The Canadian Press that he likely won’t return to Cannes next year.
