‘The Americans’ Has Been Renewed For Two More Seasons

Rejoice, comrades! One of television’s best dramas is coming to an end, but not without getting a proper wrap up. And if we have to say goodbye to The Americansthen this is the best possible outcome.

FX has announced that The Americans has been renewed for two more seasons, which will allow showrunners  Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg to bring their ’80s Cold War spy drama to a natural conclusion after six seasons. This is extremely welcome news to fans of the show, since the ratings have never been stellar and even a fifth season wasn’t guaranteed.

There is some minor bad news to go with the announcement. The sixth and final season in 2018 will consist of only 10 episodes, but the fifth season will still have a traditional 13 episode order in 2017. But considering that FX could have easily pulled the plug on this series years ago, these two seasons have to be seen as a gift to fans of the show. There are far too many television series that end abruptly before their time, leaving viewers without closure. That won’t happen here.

“It’s hard to believe we’re heading into the final stretch on The Americans,” said Fields and Weisberg in a joint statement, “and we’re so grateful to know we’ll be telling the story to its conclusion.”

The Americans was created by Weisberg, and it follows two Russian spies: Philip and Elizabeth Jennings, as played byKeri Russell and Matthew Rhys. The Jennings have lived in America for decades as a married couple with a complex relationship while making hard moral choices for their country. The Americans has also done a stellar job of creating tension with the Jennings and their children, as well as the supporting cast.

Needless to say, we’re big fans of the series here at CraveOnline, and it’s a perennial contender on our annual list of TV’s best dramas. There are still three episodes left of The Americans’ fourth season, including a new episode tonight at 10pm on FX.
