Details for the soundtrack to the upcoming Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy helmed Ghostbusters reboot has been announced, with the track-list set to feature the likes of Fall Out Boy, Missy Elliot, Wolf Alice and Australian pop-punk group 5 Seconds of Summer.
Whilst it appears that Fall Out Boy and Missy Elliot are in fact collaborating on the official theme song for the soundtrack, set to be released alongside the gender-flipped reboot of the classic Bill Murray & Dan Ackroyd film this July, the more interesting detail has to be the inclusion of teen (and 26-year-old music journalists named Mitch) heartthrobs from down under, 5SOS.
As my US colleague Bibbs recently pointed it, the Ghostbusters reboot (the trailer of which has taken out the title for most disliked YouTube trailer of all time) has been unfairly maligned in such a ridiculous, not to mention obscenely sexist, fashion, that it seems the entire man-baby population of the world has come out of their parent’s basements en masse, to form one super-group of vile, entitled misogynists who will not rest until their precious feelings about a 30-year-old movie are heard by all.
Whilst the inclusion of 5SOS could be seen to mostly be a way to further woo the band’s mostly millennial fanbase, to go see the new Ghostbusters film, there’s definitely a hidden middle-finger in the direction of said putrid whinge-bois in the move, and in all honestly, I AM HERE FOR IT.
Oh, you think your beloved comedy movie is “being shit upon” by an updated version which features arguably the four funniest women in Hollywood at the moment? How does the featuring of a chart-topping, pop band fronted by pubescent quiff-haired boys on its soundtrack make you feel? *sips tea*
Elsewhere on the soundtrack are the likes of G-Eazy featuring Jeremih and Walk The Moon, but whatever, I know what I’ll be doing over the coming days. Let the MRA vs 5SOS fandom twitter war commence. I’ll be over here with my popcorn.
