In the original Ghostbusters, Bill Murray’s Peter Venkman asserted “we came, we saw, we kicked its ass.” Wednesday, instead of busting ghosts, the 71-year-old actor, comedian, and future Ant-Man villain, booted buttocks in New York City’s Washington Square Park. Vocally.
Murray, cellist Jan Vogler, violinist Mira Wang, and pianist Vanessa Perez—who were no doubt promoting the upcoming film, New World, which documents Murray’s 2021 concert at the Acropolis in Athens—serenaded onlookers with songs including West Side Story’s “I Feel Pretty.” Suffice to say, Murray’s performance has more views than Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story remake. Thanks to Nicolas Heller we have footage of yet another magical Murray moment.
Murray also recited the poem “Dog” by Lawrence Ferlinghetti before befriending an actual dog, belted the West Side Story banger “America” and strokes the flames of theological doubt with Porgy and Bess’ “It Ain’t Necessarily So.” Unfortunately, the performance came to an abrupt end when Murray announced, “The cops say we have to turn off the microphones. Let’s rip this place apart!” Behold Heller’s remaining footage:
Imagine being one of those people who had the good fortune of witnessing Murray like a Snow Leopard (rare) in the wild. You’d tell your friends, “I was in Washington Square once. I saw Bill Murray. He sang songs with the kind of gusto typically associated with much younger men. That was a pretty good day. Why couldn’t I get that day over and over and over?”
If ever there is a Groundhog Day, let it be the day Murray felt pretty in Washington Square because now we do too.
