If you’ve ever been within miles of a farm during the heat of the summer, you’ve probably smelled the distinct, potent smell of liquid manure. If you don’t know what manure is, it’s literally animal poop that’s used to fertilize the land. Yes, they spread liquid poop everywhere and it smells exactly the way you’d expect it to. While regular poop and liquid poop are great, new research says we should be saving our own urine to use to fertilize the soil.
According to researchers, urine is an effective way to fertilize and give nutrients to the soil. The best part? We literally make it every day. Too bad we waste it by flushing it down the toilet. Fertilizers contain potassium, nitrogen, phosphorus, and other nutrients and so does our pee.
In a world where there seems to be a shortage of everything, including synthetic fertilizer, the potential of simply peeing on our plants seems pretty great to us. While we haven’t really delved too far into the science, we assume there’s more to it.
You can’t just go out and pee on your garden and hope it will thrive. Besides, you might get arrested if you do so. Scientists believe human urine can be turned into fertilizer, but are still studying the efficacy of piss. We’ll let them figure that out. In the meantime, we’ll just stick to smearing feces on all of our house plants. That’s what we’re supposed to do, right?
