Being a Montreal gal myself, I’ve (shamelessly) checked out quite a few of the fantastic pubs on Montreal’s bar scene, and they’re not only fun but can be the perfect place to unwind after a long day of work (or a long week of work, for that matter). With live bands, classic pub fare, and fantastic ambience, these are the top 10 Montreal pubs to discover in this wonderful city of mine.
McKibbons
One of the best local watering holes in Montreal (and beyond – they have three locations), McKibbons isn’t just an ideal place to whet your whistle but it also has terrific food, from classic fish n’ chips and Shepherd’s pie to prime rib and seafood chowder.
Ye Olde Orchard
With four well-established locales in and around the city as well as a new fifth in mountainous St-Saveur, Ye Olde Orchard is a quintessential Celtic pub with a welcoming ambiance, a wide variety of beers, and finger-lickin’ good Irish fare.
Hurley’s
A veritable favourite amongst my group of thirsty friends, Hurley’s is two floors of pub goodness. Their staff is amazing, there are popular local bands performing on one of two stages, and we always leave there with huge smiles on our faces (and perhaps slight wobbles to our steps).
Irish Embassy
A pub and grill (and the unofficial ambassadors of Irish hospitality), the Irish Embassy boasts a large selection of draught beers, an extensive menu featuring traditional Irish and Canadian dishes (that are all freshly prepared in-house), warm and friendly staff, and a broad selection of Celtic and contemporary music.
Ziggys
All the locals love Ziggys – it really is the type of place where everyone knows your name. The rumour is that Jack Daniels resides here, and judging by the crowds that pour into this pub every night, it’s more than just the whiskey that keeps everyone coming back for more.
The Old Dublin
It may be in a new location (636 Cathcart) but The Old Dublin is one of the top 10 Montreal pubs because of its long-standing staying power – they’ve been a city fave for decades. They have more than 15 imported and domestic beers on tap, over 50 single malts, a full menu, and live entertainment.
Sir Winston Churchill Pub
A great hotspot in the wintertime, Winnie’s is also the perfect meet-up place in the summertime, with two jam-packed outdoor patios along Crescent Street, the nightlife strip in Montreal. It’s not only a great place for a brew – they have top-notch cocktails and sangria and a full (and delicious) menu too.
Le Cheval Blanc
When they opened their doors back in 1986, Le Cheval Blanc was the first licensed brew pub in the city… and today it’s one of the go-to Montreal pubs. But this isn’t your every-day bar – they serve eclectic foods like Hungarian-style hot dogs, they feature artwork by local artists, and they showcase jazz musicians. But one thing remains – their extensive selection of beers.
McLean’s Pub
Built in 1910 as a private residence, the building at 1210 Peel Street became a tavern in the early 1930s. Under a variety of names it has remained as a tavern and serves the thirsty needs of both local residents and visitors alike. Catch a game here and indulge in one of their mouth-watering burgers.
Les Deux Pierrots
Everyone loves sipping on a cold on in Old Montreal – the cobblestone streets, charming European buildings, and abundance of cool crowds are always a major draw. And right in the heart of it all is Les Deux Pierrots, which stretches from the Paul Street right to the Port, with amazing views and incredible staff… and plenty to get your drink on.
