Apple is set to introduce CarPlay to a range of existing cars via firmware updates, the company has revealed.
CarPlay provides a “safer iPhone experience” in your car, allowing you to navigate many of the iPhone’s features such as music, messaging and Google Maps via an in-dash display. Up until this point CarPlay has only been advertised as being available for upcoming vehicles, though the company has now revealed that it will be featured in existing cars through an aftermarket system.
Apple has revealed that CarPlay will soon be able to be added to both Alpine and Pioneer vehicles, alongside the upcoming CarPlay support it will be providing for Ferrari, Honda, Hyundai, Mercedez-Benz and Volvo in 2014. Apple will also be partnering with multiple automotive manufacturers in the future in order to introduce CarPlay to their future models, with the feature being available in future models from the following companies: BMW, Chevrolet, Ford, Jaguar, Kia, Land Rover, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Opel, Psa Peugeot Citroen, Subaru, Suzuki, and Toyota.
