‘Boardwalk Empire’ Season 5 Jumps To The Great Depression

During the fourth season of “Boardwalk Empire,” the year was 1924 and the fortunes of Nicky Thompson (Steve Buscemi) and Chalky White (Michael K. Williams) started to crash. But in the upcoming fifth and final season of “Boardwalk Empire,” things may get worse for both men.

While speaking with Den of Geek, Williams admitted that “The storyline has jumped seven years [into the future], which is why I have the beard now… The Depression has set in. The days of the shiny shoes and fancy suits are long gone.”

A seven year jump would place “Boardwalk Empire” Season 5 in 1931, two years after the great stock market crash of 1929 and two years before the end of Prohibition itself. For Nucky, that would mean that his step-children Teddy and Emily (through his former marriage to Kelly Macdonald’s Margaret Schroeder) will be young adults in this time period.

Den of Geek also notes that “Boardwalk Empire” may compress the ten year fall of Nucky’s historical counterpart, Enoch “Nucky” Johnson into the final season.

As for Chalky White, Williams indicated that he is still out for revenge against Jeffrey Wright’s Dr. Narcisse after the botched hit on Narcisse’s life resulted in the death of Chalky’s daughter in the fourth season finale.

“It ended very badly for Chalky last year,” related Williams. “His family life is no more, and he is desperately seeking Dr. Narcisse to settle old scores.”

“Boardwalk Empire” Season 5 will premiere this fall on HBO.
