A jilted Chinese man has spent $40,000 on IMAX theatre tickets to Transformers: Age of Extinction in cinemas across Beijing in order to prove to his ex-girlfriend how rich he’s become.
The South China Morning Post reports the man, referred to as Mr Wang, bought hundreds of the cinema tickets with about half his monthly earnings and is giving them away for free online in order to show off his newfound wealth to a woman who dumped him seven years ago.
Wang posted on his Weibo microblog that seven years ago his girlfriend at the time dumped him and then skipped town after he was not able to afford to take her to the movies. He then managed to turn heartbreak into opportunity and now he’s out to show his ex-lover exactly what she’s missing out on.
“I only want to say that you might have been wrong when you made that decision,” he wrote on his Weibo last week. In an effort to spread the word and reach his ex, he said he would give away tickets to anyone who shares his online post.
According to the Morning Post, the message had been shared over 110,000 times, drawn some 35,000 comments and some 1,590 bloggers have since been awarded a ticket for helping Wang with his goal. Some movie-goers though are upset by the stunt, outraged that one man’s romantic grudge is stopping them from getting their own tickets to the latest instalment in the Michael Bay franchise.
According to Variety, Transformers: Age of Extinction is set to shatter opening weekend records in China. Studio execs now owe at least a percentage of that to one romantically jilted Chinese man or even perhaps to the mystery woman who left him heartbroken.
