Melbourne International Film Festival 2014 Program

The Melbourne International Film Festival has announced its full program for 2014, boasting a massive 341 films from a total of 52 different countries. The 2014 festival will run across Melbourne from 31st July to 17th August.

The festival’s closing film will be the locally made political thriller Felony, directed by Melbourne filmmaker Matthew Saville and written by Joel Edgerton who also stars along with Tom Wilkinson, Jai Courtney, and Melissa George.

The film festival’s Centrepiece Gala, Cut Snake, a ’70s set and inspired revenge thriller was also filmed on Australian streets along with the already announced opening night film Predestination, a time-travel thriller starring Ethan Hawke.

Also announced is MIFF’s Backbeat music documentary selection. Features this year include Nick Cave’s 20,000 Days On Earth, Pulp: A Film About Life, Death and Supermarkets which details Britpop band Pulp’s reunion tour, Heaven Adores You about late musician Elliott Smith, Jimi: All Is By My Side a Jimi Hendrix biopic starring André Benjamin of OutKast and Time is Illmatic, a film about hip-hop artist Nas‘ genre defining album Illmatic.

Other standout films announced on the 2014 program include I Am Big Bird, a film about Caroll Spinney, the 80-year-old puppeteer who has been behind “Sesame Street”’s Big Bird since the show’s first season and The Skeleton Twins, a film starring Bill Hader, Kristen Wiig and Luke Wilson.

The MIFF’s hub will again be at the Forum on Flinders Street, with movies also screening at ACMI, the Kino, and Melbourne Central, the IMAX and the Melbourne Planetarium. The Capitol Theatre on Swanston St and the Treasury Cinema on Spring Street will also host some screenings.
