Australian hopeful Nick Kyrgios is in doubt to make an appearance at this years Australian Open due to ongoing soreness in his back and now, his knee.
In a disrupted comeback from injury, Kyrgios struggled against Polish workhorse Jerzy Janowicz in his exit from the Sydney International on Tuesday 6-1, 6-7 (8-6), 7-6 (7-4).
World number 50 Kyrgios was visibly disrupted during the third set tie-breaker by a knee injury. He hobbled around the court between points, at times signalling to his coach that he was ‘no good’. He tweeted to fans after the match, indicating his frustration and uncertainty.
After withdrawing from the Hopman Cup with back soreness, Kyrgios heads into the Australian Open with only one game under his belt with plenty of doubt as to whether the young-star will make it onto court.
“I can only do so much for the Australian Open I guess … so we’ll see how it goes,” Kyrgios commented when asked if he would play in Melbourne.
“I am just doing whatever I can to get out there and compete but I am not at the level I would like to be at.”
