Xavier Dolan’s Mommy Cleans Up At Canadian Screen Awards

Montreal’s Xavier Dolan may be young but that hasn’t stopped him from making huge waves in the film biz – this past weekend his project “Mommy” was the big winner at the Canadian Screen Awards, as was the Tatiana Maslany-led television series “Orphan Black.”

On Sunday night the gala event, hosted by comedienne Andrea Martin (“SCTV”) in Toronto, saw “Mommy” receive nine awards in total, including the award for Best Film – it stars Anne Dorval, Antoine Olivier Pilon and Suzanne Clement. “Orphan Black” as well as Maslany were celebrated with awards (10 for the series in all). “Rookie Blue” won for Best Drama Series, “Call Me Fitz” won two awards, and “The Amazing Race Canada” won for best reality series.

“Pompeii” won six awards. “What’s extraordinary is when you take a look at the movie and realize that it was actually shot in Toronto, it is a great testament to the talent and the digital role that now exists in film, and that Canada can do that as well as anyone,” said actor Kiefer Sutherland, who plays a villain in the film, in an interview with CBC’s Eli Glasner on the red carpet.

“Let’s give out some awards before they turn this place into a condo!” Martin said as the show launched from downtown Toronto’s glass-encased opera house (CBC News).

The Canadian Screen Awards capped off an entire week of events celebrating Canadian TV, film and digital programming.
