The entry level iPhone storage option could be set to change, with Apple reportedly looking at making the iPhone 7 32GB the standard model of the smartphone and doing away with the 16GB option altogether.
Many complaints have been leveled at Apple in regards to the iPhone’s storage options, given that the 16GB model offers a pitiful amount of storage that can easily be filled within a matter of months after the operating system has been downloaded and the default apps installed. This lackluster amount of storage meant that iPhone buyers often opted to purchase the more reasonable 64GB option, which typically sells for $100 more than the standard option.
The introduction of a 32GB for the iPhone 7 would, therefore, be a very consumer-friendly move on Apple’s behalf, which is particularly vital considering that Apple reported its first quarterly sales decline since 2003 earlier this year. Doing away with a 16GB iPhone 7 would effectively kill off Apple’s crucial high up-selling opportunities, though, so this information should inevitably be taken with a pinch of salt.
Apple has remained stubborn in its refusal to align itself with competitors such as Samsung, whose entry-level flagship the Samsung Galaxy S7 has an entry-level model with 32GB of internal storage. With there being much speculation that the iPhone 7 won’t reinvent the wheel and will echo many of the same design choices as the iPhone 6S, perhaps Apple is hoping that by upping the amount of storage offered in the basic iPhone 7 headset, this could be a key selling point.
The iPhone 7 will be announced by Apple later this year, with the new smartphone projected to launch in September.
