2016 L.A. Auto Show | 2017 Honda Civic SI Prototype Joins the Family

Honda updated its performance-centric Civic Si with its new 2017 prototype on the scene at the 2016 L.A. Auto Show. The Japanese automaker promises it’ll build the fastest, most powerful version of the popular compact build.

The massively successful Civic lineup is offering its 10th design generation in 2017. The Si Coupe and Si Sedan will join that group to offer more active steering and suspension, a limited-slip differential and high-performance tires. And, as all small, nimble drivers’ cats should, the Civic Si will come in only a manual transmission.

The car on display on the show floor is a prototype and not a final production vehicle. However, its important to note Honda is not calling the car a concept vehicle. Such a concept machine at any auto show exists only to indicate a suggested direction an automaker can take in the years ahead. A prototype is the first car for a model sure to go int production. The Civic Si will exist in a form not too far off from this one.

According to Honda’s specs, this Ciivic Si Prototype arrives in Rally Red Pearl and is set up with a full Factory Performance aero kit. The special features include front and rear splitters, a rear spoiler a center-mounted polygonal exhaust finisher and 19-inch, high-performance tires mounted on forged aluminum alloy wheels.

Once moved beyond the prototype stage, the 2017 Civic Si Coupe and Si Sedan will come with a performance-tuned 1.5-liter, direct injected and turbocharged in-line four cylinder engine mated to that short-shift,  six speed manual.

Though there’s no official release date yet, it’s locked in that the Civic Si Coupe and Si Sedan will arrive next year — prices to be determined.
