Fiat Chrysler CEO, Sergio Marchionne announced that Ferrari has plans to introduce the very first electric supercar and challenge the leader in the field of electric cars – Tesla. Besides the supercar, Marchionne also announced an electric SUV to be released sometime in 2019 or 2020. His plan is to start the production of hybrid cars first and then move on to electric cars because that would be an easier transition. The concept is at an early stage and, for now, there are no stats or sketches telling us what these cars might look like. Either way, there’s no doubt that it’s a step in the right direction.

Ferrari’s Electric Supercar

Marchionne started his statement by commending the visionary Elon Musk and his company Tesla, which was the first to start the mass production of electric cars. However, almost immediately he countered his praise by saying that anyone can do it. This is not the first time that Marchionne gave contrary statements since he first rejected the idea of an electric supercar as a preposterous some time ago. Obviously, he is no stranger to conflicting opinions.

We still don’t know the release date for their electric supercar, but it will happen before Tesla’s announced Roadster in 2020. Marchionne’s competitive nature is evident here, but as long as it brings us a cleaner and ecologically safer way of travel – it’s quite acceptable. Though there are still no concept ideas for it, he stressed the fact that the supercar would have to feel and drive like a Ferrari. Of course, Ferrari is not the only company that announced electric cars. Both BMW and Porsche said that we can expect to see these vehicles in the years to come.

You can expect the price to be rather high since it’s, after all, a Ferrari and they certainly enjoy their exclusivity. Are you excited about this news?
