When we order a pint of Guinness stout at a neighborhood bar or pub, we’re hoping that it will look and taste the same way it would in a pub somewhere in Dublin or rural Ireland. We’re looking for a frothy, creamy head, and a silky smooth, luxurious, almost dessert-like flavor mouthfeel to go along with the decadent, coffee, and chocolate flavors. When we crack open a can of Pepsi we’re hoping for caramel sweetness and a lot of fizzy, effervescent bubbles. We’re definitely not looking for the same flavor profile as our pint of Guinness. Yet, Pepsi thinks we do.
They must think this because they’re launching a new product called Nitro Pepsi which is a cola infused with nitrogen instead of the usual carbon dioxide. This is similar to the can of Guinness Draught or Boddington’s Pub Ale you purchase at your neighborhood grocery store. This means, instead of the usual fizzy taste, this cola (which comes in classic or vanilla flavors) is creamy, and frothy, like a hand-drawn beer.
While we’d love to try it, we personally don’t understand the appeal. Part of why we enjoy soda is the fizzy bubbles. That’s why we like seltzer water so much. The fizzier the better we always say.
If you’re the type of person who prefers their soda flat, you can buy four-packs of draft cola and vanilla draft cola Nitro Pepsi when it hits store shelves on March 28.
