Mandatory Food Trends: Butter Boards Are a Thing We Have to Try Now (Thanks, TikTok)

We, like every other red-blooded American male, love butter. But we don’t need to try to improve on the original. You really can’t do better than a nice thick pat of plain old butter, no matter where you put it: toast, a baked potato, corn on the cob. That yellow fatty lubricant just makes everything edible slide down our gullets that much more easily – and more deliciously. But some people have grandiose ideas about what butter can do, and we don’t know if we’re on board. We’re talking about Butter Boards, the latest food trend on TikTok.

WTF is a butter board? Our thoughts exactly. Basically, it’s the dairy lover’s version of a charcuterie board. We have TikToker Justine Doiron (who goes by @justine_snacks) to thank for this invention. She was the first influencer we’ve seen create a Butter Board, which was inspired by a recipe in Six Seasons: A new way with vegetables, a James Beard Award-winning cookbook by Joshua McFadden and Martha Holmberg.

In the now insanely-viral video, Doiron is seen smearing butter on a cutting board, then sprinkling it with herbs, salt, lemon zest, onions, and edible flower petals. She tops off the too-pretty-to-eat spread with a drizzle of honey.

Other TikTokers then jumped on the trend, creating their own Butter Boards with other ingredients like figs, truffles, and bacon.

If you’re thinking, “Why bother with this Butter Board bullshit?” rest assured that many TikTokers have similarly expressed confusion at the need to complicate God’s already perfect creation.

“My only question is why,” one TikTok observer wrote.

“so we are eating just butter now?” another asked.

“I get disappointed in people more n more everyday,” another seemingly sighed.

The whole idea of a Butter Board is to serve it alongside some high-quality bread as an appetizer at a party. It’s quick to put together, pleasing to the eye, and can be shared with a crowd.

Last time we checked, though, a stick of butter on a plate does the same thing – without everyone dragging their grubby little fingers through your spread.

And now, if you’ll excuse us, we’re in the mood to devour a pound of room-temperature butter.
