Both Vodafone and Optus mobile networks have experienced widespread outages today, leaving some carriers unable to make phone calls, send text messages or use data. Many customers have taken to social media to vent their frustrations.
Reports Fairfax Media, a Vodafone spokeswoman confirmed that some customers across Australia were having difficulty with their network just before about “We’re aware that we do have a network outage. We’re just trying to understand where it is exactly,” she said.
Vodafone say they first suffered a network outage in Perth earlier this morning morning due to a broken transmission link, however reports of disruption have now spread nationally. At present it is unknown exactly how many people have been affected.
Separately Optus posted announcement of reported network disruptions on their Twitter account at around 3pm AEST today. “We are aware of an issue affecting some Optus customers at the moment. We’re currently investigating the problem and will keep you updated.”
“We apologise for the inconvenience. Our engineering teams are working hard to fix the problem,” added the telco. Despite the many customers flooded the social media pages of the two mobile carriers with complaints, neither have said when the problem will be fixed.
